If you’ve done any research into online marketing, chances are you’ve come across the term “pay per click” or its abbrevation, “PPC”. But what do they refer to? Basically, pay per click advertising is an online marketing strategy.
Like all other marketing tools at your disposal, pay per click is a good one to have in your arsenal because it can bring high quality targeted traffic to your website… fast!
Organic Traffic Can Take Time
In order for your website to be seen and clicked on by as many web users as possible, you’ll have to implement ways to get your website to the top of the organic search results. It can be a difficult slog, and most online businesses never get ranked higher than the third page of search results – virtual no man’s land when it comes to pulling traffic.
The majority of web users won’t “mine through” more than the first page of results to find what they want. If you want to beat out your competitors for business, you’ll have to make sure your site is visible on Google’s front page. If you are not too sharp on search engine optimisation, pay per click advertising can be a good way to do that. How does pay per click advertising work? Lets take a look at the basics:
How Does Pay Per Click Advertising Work
You select the keywords or phrases you want to use for your site, and you bid on these words. The highest bidder “wins” and their site is ranked the highest by the search engine. There is no cost upfront; you only pay what you have bid after someone clicks on your link from the search engine. That is why it is referred to as pay-per-click. You pay for every click you receive.
PPC is a great way for your to ensure that you are receiving a formidable web presence. You will have to bid high enough to beat the competition for the top position, but don’t bid so much that you’ll start to go broke once people start clicking on your ads.
Millions of people worldwide click on PPC advertisements every day. Pay per click advertising is at the forefront of the internet marketing trend because it can and does produce results much faster than search engine optimisation, which can take weeks or months to start showing a return on your investment of time and resources.
If you can do it effectively, a pay per click campaign can be very successful at attracting targeted traffic in a very short timeframe. Because it works quickly, it can be a very cost-effective way to make money online if done correctly.
Yes, you’ll have to pay for each click your ad receives, but always bear in mind that without traffic to your site, you have no customers. The more you can do to drive traffic to your site, the more chance you have of making sales.
Another advantage of pay per click ad campaigns is that you can manage your campaign and monitor it to see what keywords and ads are producing the best ROI. If you monitor your PPC campaign results closely by testing and measuring different keywords and ad copy, PPC can work very well. Don’t fall into the trap of setting up a half assed campaign and hope for the best, as this type of approach almost always fails. Be Weary
In saying all of the above, I am a big believer in utilising social media and search engine optimisation to attract free organic traffic, as all you are outlaying for your rankings and traffic is your time. Be weary of starting pay per click advertising without a solid knowledge of how it works as it can become very expensive. Like anything, there is a right and wrong way of achieving success and it would be wise to find out all you can about PPC before you start outlaying your hard earned cash.
So… How does pay per click advertising work – it works very well if done correctly!

It is hard to beat organic traffic from SEO and social media, that’s for sure Belinda! For people who are new to PPC, by all means give it a go, just set your daily spend limits to something small that you can afford. Testing small campaigns can give you some great experience and knowledge that will come in very handy when you beef up your pay per click campaigns in the future.
Hi Rat,
Thanks for the great overview of PPC. You really make it easy to understand. I really like that you can set a budget so even if you get it wrong you can limit the damage.
Do you need PPC if you are organically ranked in the top three positions for most of your keywords?
