What is internet marketing? By definition, internet marketing refers to the business of advertising and selling services or products online. As more and more aspects of our lives move into the online world, Internet marketing is becoming more and more a business reality.
More people than ever before are making purchases online and because of that, businesses are having to learn ways to market their products and services to an online audience.
What Is Internet Marketing – An Introduction
During the early years of Internet marketing (the early part of the 1990s) it consisted of little more than just descriptions of a company’s products or services, usually in text only. With the advancements in computer technology came the addition of graphic elements to online advertising, making the advertisements more enticing to online audiences.
Before long, the amazing potential for online marketing became quite apparent and the age of e-commerce dawned. Nowadays, online businesses are becoming quite the norm, often becoming the consumer’s choice of brick-and-mortar versions of the same companies. In our busy lives, convenience is king, and because of that, more and more of us are choosing to conduct business online. Enter the need for online marketing.
Internet marketing is not one homogeneous idea, online marketing wears many hats. These can include blog marketing, e-mail marketing, article marketing, banner ads, pop-up advertising and affiliate marketing, among many others. The goal of each of these forms of advertising, however, is no different than traditional marketing efforts: to gain an audience, to convince them your product meets a need they have, and to convert browsers into buyers. In short, the goal of Internet marketing is to make money online.
Internet marketing can be one of the most cost-effective ways to get your message out to a potential customer base. That being said, however, all the marketing efforts in the world will be for nothing if no one pays attention. You can have the most aesthetically pleasing website online, but if people do not know it’s there, your efforts will go unrewarded.
To avoid that, it’s necessary to build strong internet marketing foundations and strategies designed to drive traffic to your site in the hope of providing your business with a reasonable sales conversion rate, that is, a high percentage of people who, after visiting your site, are compelled to actually buy what you are selling.
Now that we have covered the basic question of what is internet marketing, stay tuned to this blog as we will be movingĀ deeper into the many methods available to market products online over the coming weeks.

I guess the thing that has confused me about internet marketing is the fact that I’ve only seen the products of the Internet Marketing Gurus and their Internet Marketing is to market the means to Internet Marketing, if that makes any sense.
If I think about it, the concept of Internet Marketing (doing business through the internet) is the catch phrase, but the Gurus are selling the process of Internet Marking (list building, SEO, traffic, etc.) through the concept. But because the concept is continuing to grow, the biggest market is the process. An endless circle?

Hi Rat,
This is an excellent overview of internet marketing. When I first started to look for ways to make money online; I didn’t even know enough to search for it by name.
Internet marketing is actually very similar to having an offline business. Either way you need to have some kind of site where you try to market your products and services to customers.
I still have a lot to learn but I’m getting a little closer all the time.
