Every online business owner should create a detailed business plan. Part of that business plan is the section for online advertising and marketing; another part is the estimated budget for creating a successful operation. You cannot have one without the other.
Sure, you can use internet marketing techniques that cost nothing but time, but the chances of achieving huge amounts of success are reduced. In order to make the most money, you are going to have spend some in most cases.
How Much Should You Spend?
How much is enough? If you are just starting your business, you have no historical data to consider. Too often, the start-up entrepreneur sets aside a very small or even non-existent internet marketing budget. Don’t make the same mistake. Internet marketing is a vital piece of your business. Don’t short change yourself and delay your efforts to reach target markets.
Most companies in a variety of industries earmark anywhere from five to 15% of revenue (gross profits) for marketing. Generally, companies that offer business to business services spend less than those that aim to corner the consumer market. This is due to the size of the target market; there will always be fewer businesses than consumers so obviously the methodology of reaching them will be different. The same holds true for wholesale versus retail operations; retail companies are plagued with far more competitors.
Vary The Amount
Start with the higher percentage of 15% when your company is first getting established online. Each year that goes by means that you can reduce that percentage slightly. The more branding and reach you achieve through marketing, the less you need to spend in the future.
The longer you use internet marketing strategies and techniques, the better you will become at determining which methods are most efficient and produce the highest ROI. As you establish a history of marketing, you can review results on a periodic basis and make decisions for future investments based on what worked and what didn’t.
Keep Track
A PPC advertising campaign is one of the most effective forms of marketing but it is also one of the most expensive. Be sure to keep detailed records of everything that goes into your campaigns as well as keeping track of all costs involved. Try, test, and analyse, then try, test, and analyse again. One campaign does not provide adequate information. Remember that there will always be outside variables you might not consider that affect the results.
It is always a good idea to keep track of your competitors, too. Where is their listing showing up in the SERPs? If a competing company is consistently in the number one spot, it’s going to take a bigger investment to knock them out of first place for your preferred keywords, and search engine rankings are never set in stone so your efforts to get and then stay at the top will never cease.
Internet Marketing Budget – What Can You Afford?
In a recessionary economy, many companies try to save money by immediately reducing the amount of their internet marketing budget. But this does not make sense. When competition is fierce and customers are scarce, marketing is likely the only thing keeping our company alive. Of course you can’t spend money you don’t have, but do divert revenue from truly unnecessary expenses in order to continue your marketing efforts.
Internet marketing is a vital part of any business. Budget for it appropriately by starting high and gradually decreasing the percentage as success is achieved. Be sure you have several methods of marketing as well because a winning solution today may become archaic or blacklisted as soon as tomorrow. Never let your internet marketing budget funding dwindle down to zero or you could quickly lose your competitive edge.

I can definitely second the fact that a PPC campaign can get expensive. It is vital that you do not set and forget, otherwise you can run through your budget so quickly that you will not have enough time to test and measure anything.
It is also important to list all costs associated with your internet marketing budget. I have seen many financial planners explain that every dollar that you track and can account for give you that little bit extra of control over your money – same goes for internet marketing expenses.
